Content ratings
What the All ages, Teen and Mature (18+) ratings mean, how mature work stays hidden until you opt in, and how creators should rate their work.
Every work and series on Frameleaf has one of three maturity ratings. Creators choose the rating when they publish. Ratings help you decide what to watch and read, and they keep mature work out of sight for anyone who hasn't chosen to see it.
The three ratings
| Rating | What it means |
|---|---|
| All ages | Suitable for everyone |
| Teen | Mild violence, language or themes |
| Mature (18+) | Graphic violence, strong language or adult themes. Hidden unless viewers opt in. |
Teen work carries a 13+ badge and Mature work carries an 18+ badge, so you can see the rating before you open anything.
All ages
Suitable for everyone. For example:
- a cosy slice-of-life short set in a café
- a fantasy map with lore about its kingdoms
- cartoon action where nobody is really hurt
Teen
Mild violence, language or themes. For example:
- sci-fi battles without blood or lingering injury
- occasional mild swearing
- spooky stories built on tension and atmosphere rather than gore
- themes like grief, bullying or loss, handled without graphic detail
Mature (18+)
Graphic violence, strong language or adult themes. For example:
- graphic violence, gore or body horror
- frequent strong language
- intense horror
- adult themes such as drug use or abuse, treated seriously
- non-explicit nudity in an artistic context, such as a figure study
Mature doesn't mean anything goes. Sexually explicit content (pornography) isn't allowed at any rating.
How mature work is hidden
Work rated Mature (18+) is hidden from:
- guests who aren't signed in
- signed-in viewers who haven't turned on "Show mature content"
Hidden work is left out of what you see as you browse. If you open a mature work directly, for example from a shared link, you see a notice instead of the work. The notice asks you to sign in, or to turn on mature content if you're already signed in.
Turn on mature content
- Go to Preferences.
- Turn on "Show mature content".
You must be 18 or over to turn this on. It's off by default on every account. To hide mature work again, turn the setting off.
Rating a series
A series has its own maturity rating, which you set in Studio under Series. Rate a series for its most mature episode: if one episode is Mature (18+), the series should be too. Each episode keeps its own rating as well, so rate every work in the series.
Choosing a rating for your work
- Rate for the most intense moment, not the average.
- If you're unsure between two ratings, choose the higher one.
- Keep your thumbnail, title and description within the rating, because they appear wherever the work is listed.
- Consider the whole work, including sound, dialogue and on-screen text.
What's never allowed
Some content isn't allowed at any rating. This includes:
- sexual content involving minors, including AI-generated or drawn characters who appear to be under 18
- sexually explicit content (pornography)
- non-consensual intimate imagery, and sexualised depictions of real people
- realistic depictions of real people saying or doing things they didn't, unless it's clearly labelled satire or commentary about a public figure
The community guidelines have the full list.
If a rating is wrong
If you think a work is rated too low, use Report on the work and choose the reason that fits best, such as "Violent or graphic content".
We review reports. If a work is rated too low, we may re-rate it. If it breaks the guidelines, we remove it. Repeatedly under-rating work is a breach of the guidelines and follows the usual warning and suspension steps.
If you're a creator and think we re-rated your work by mistake, open a request at /support/new and tell us why.
